By mid-September my calendar still says autumn, but somewhere in the house a Christmas playlist has already started on repeat. That’s the tell that the movies are coming back — not the lights, not the candy, the movies. I’ve been rewatching Home Alone and Elf on loop for years, and one year my local TV station even ran a Christmas-in-July block, which proved to me that December is not the only month people need a little holiday on screen.
So I built a dedicated movie round: 200 Christmas movie trivia questions and answers, graded from easy to hard, covering films and a handful of beloved TV specials that generations treat as part of the season. Grab a sheet of paper, take one point for every correct answer, and keep your tally until the end — a score guide is waiting after question 200.

How the difficulty works
The easy round sticks to characters, major scenes and details from movies a lot of people rewatch every December. Medium requires more specific recall — supporting characters, props, jobs, songs — but the films stay familiar. Hard goes deeper into production history, music and behind-the-scenes facts, without hiding in tiny crew credits or impossible statistics.
You don’t have to use every question. If you do run all 200, keep one point per correct answer and check the score bands at the end.
Easy questions (1-60)
The first 60 are built for a strong start that never feels childish. Family favorites, animation and older films mix through this round, so it works for a mixed-age group or as the opener of a longer quiz.

The final 50 dig into movie details, music, source material, actors and production history. There are a few deep cuts, but the goal is not to punish you with credits from films hardly anyone has seen. Many answers should still produce that satisfying “I knew that!” reaction.
Tougher details from movies you know (151-175)
These stay with recognizable films and ask for smaller details you may not remember on the first try. They’re built for the final rounds of a trivia night, where a regular fan still has a realistic shot at the answer.

How did you do? Score guide
If you gave yourself one point for every correct answer, here’s where you landed. The questions get harder as they go, so landing in the upper bands means you remembered far more than the big characters and storylines.
0-49 — Christmas Movie Starter. You recognized some of the big favorites, and you’ve now got new details to look for on your next rewatch.
50-89 — Holiday Movie Regular. The major classics are familiar, and you picked up respectable points once the questions turned specific.
90-129 — December Rewatcher. You clearly know your Christmas movies, and the medium round probably went by without too much trouble.
130-159 — Christmas Movie Buff. Supporting characters and smaller details didn’t catch you out very often.
160-184 — Holiday Screen Expert. You know the famous films and a surprising number of the deeper details too.
185-199 — Christmas Movie Master. Missing only a handful out of 200 is seriously impressive.
200 — Perfect score. If you got every question right without looking anything up, you should probably run the next trivia night.
How to run the game
You don’t need all 200 questions every time. For a party, family gathering or office event, mix the three difficulty levels so casual viewers can score points while stronger players still get a challenge.
A quick 10-question round: take four easy, four medium and two hard questions. Pulling from different movies works better than several consecutive questions about the same title.
A 20-question family game: seven easy, nine medium and four hard is a workable balance. Choose movies your group actually knows and leave out titles that don’t fit the ages in the room.
A full trivia night: 40 to 60 questions gives you enough material for several rounds. Start with familiar titles, raise the difficulty gradually, and save a few questions from the final stretch for the last round.
How I selected and fact-checked these questions
A 200-question quiz gets repetitive fast when the same handful of movies shows up in every online trivia collection. I wanted a broader mix — without padding the hard round with films hardly anyone has seen. So the biggest American favorites appear throughout, alongside older classics, animation, romantic comedies, British favorites and selected newer streaming films. TV specials like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman and A Charlie Brown Christmas are included in small numbers: they’ve been part of annual holiday viewing for many families for decades, even though they weren’t theatrical features.
I also checked the finished set against itself — the same fact isn’t deliberately repeated in another form, and an answer from an earlier question isn’t simply reversed and reused later as a new question. Every answer in the set is unique. Where a remake could change an answer, the specific version is named, and production, award and history facts were cross-checked against studio material and Academy Awards records. Last fact-checked: September 2026.
The Science, Simplified: The “science” here is just quiz design — easy questions build confidence, medium questions test real recall, and hard questions separate the watchers from the rewatchers. Keep every answer unique, keep the movies recognizable even in the hard round, and you get a game where the person who just finished their first season of holiday movies and the person who counts the lights on the Griswold house can both walk away feeling smart.
FAQ
What makes a good Christmas movie trivia question for adults?
Mix recognizable films with details that require actual recall. Supporting characters, settings, memorable props, actors, songs and smaller plot moments make a stronger quiz than asking only for movie titles or filling the game with obscure production credits.
What works for easy questions with families?
Focus on familiar characters, destinations, gifts, animals, relationships and major plot moments from movies the group knows. Easy shouldn’t mean the answer is hiding in the question — players should still have to remember something.
What makes a hard question fair?
Ask for a deeper detail from a recognizable film. A specific prop, supporting character, song, actor or important production fact can be difficult without becoming random. A tiny crew credit from an unfamiliar film may be hard, but it doesn’t make the game more fun.
How many questions do you need for a party?
Ten is enough for a very quick game, and 20 to 30 works well for a casual party. For a full trivia night, 40 to 60 questions allow several rounds and a gradual rise in difficulty without forcing everyone to play all 200.
Which movies work best?
The familiar staples — Home Alone, Elf, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, The Santa Clause, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Polar Express, It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street and Love Actually — anchor any game. Adding animation, romantic comedies, older classics and selected newer movies gives more people a chance to know something.
Can kids and adults play the same game?
Yes. Choose most questions from familiar family films and the easy or medium sections, then add a few harder ones for the adults. The deciding factor isn’t age so much as which movies everyone has actually watched.
Why include TV specials at all?
Several have been annual Christmas viewing for decades, so people treat Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman and A Charlie Brown Christmas as holiday movies even though they weren’t theatrical features. Keeping them to a limited number adds familiar favorites without changing the quiz’s focus.
If the movies have already put you in the mood, send this list to the person who insists they never miss a Christmas movie detail — and compare scores. Here’s what I tell my clients when the pre-season playlist starts too early: a little holiday trivia now is the cheapest recovery work you’ll do all December.
